Supplementary Learning Materials for Digital Reader App
Project Outline
bekids Reading was built around a 100-book original graded reader series, created in partnership with Oxford University Press. The app featured interactive story content, learning games, and printable activity books to support reading development in young learners. A version of the app was released in China under the title iHuman Fantastic Friends, with a global edition later developed for international markets.
My Input
Created early character concepts and story settings to support author and illustrator briefings
Led a small academic content team to write all in-app supporting content: pre/post-reading questions, learning games, and grammar hints
Edited printable activity books for clarity, tone, and accessibility—adapting complex concepts for a global, English-only audience
Challenge & Solution
The original activity books were created for Chinese-speaking learners and included explanations in both English and Mandarin. For the global edition, we needed to deliver the same learning value using English-only materials—without losing clarity or overwhelming young users.
I audited the bilingual editions and restructured the content to reduce cognitive load, prioritising simple language, clearer scaffolding, and increased use of examples. This made the activities more accessible to children and parents in diverse language environments, while maintaining learning integrity.
Printable Activity Book
These pages are from the global edition of the printable activity books. Tasks were simplified and restructured from the China version to ensure clarity for learners and parents with no teacher or L1-language support. Content was edited to align with CEFR targets and reflect brand tone.
